Research Interest

The research group Experimental Taxonomy investigates the reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships, the evolution of morphological characters, and the influence of geology and ecology on species in space and time. This work is done in crops and their wild relatives. Our aim is to contribute to the understanding of basic mechanisms involved in speciation and species cohesion. As mainly molecular methods are used in plant systematics, and genetic processes play a major role in speciation, many links with research in the area of genomics are established.

Like other research groups of the institute, we use a wide range of molecular marker techniques, which are adapted to the various projects. These include comparative DNA sequencing of chloroplast and nuclear DNA regions, PCR based methods such as microsatellites and DNA fingerprinting techniques (AFLP, RAPD), and gene expression analyses. Recently, we have developed microsatellite markers for onion, several Macaranga species and hamster, which are now exploited in various population genetic projects. The development of a method for rapid and reliable screening of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) resulted in the foundation of the start-up company Array-On.

To analyze questions related to speciation we employ population genetic and phylogeographic (i.e. gene genealogies and network analysis approaches) together with 'classical' phylogenetic methods, greenhouse experiments, and field studies (currently mainly in Patagonia and Borneo). These methods are complemented by modeling of extant and Pleistocene climatic niches of species (ecological niche modellng or species distribution modeling). Together with molecular population analyses we are able to draw conclusions about ice-age refugia and changes (or conservatism) of the ecological niches of species through time.

The taxa we are working on are wild species of Triticeae, particularly the barley genus Hordeum, St.-John's wort (Hypericum), ant-plants (myrmecophytes) of the euphorb genus Macaranga, Crocus, jute (Corchorus), onions (Allium) and African cucurbits.
