The research group is responsible for the management of the Gatersleben genebank collection including the long term cold storage of nearly 130,000 accessions, the in vivo maintenance of about 1,500 holdings and the reproduction of about 10,000 accessions per season. Each year between 10,000 and 15,000 samples are provided for reseach and breeding institutions world-wide. Main research topics are the investigation of the genetic integrity after long term maintenance, the study of the dynamics of genetic diversity as well as the extensive evaluation and genetic characterisation of the genebank collections, mainly cereals. The experimental work is done in close co-operation with research groups of the IPK highly experienced with molecular techniques (Rg Molekular Markers, Rg Experimental Taxonomy, Rg Gene und Genome Mapping).
After the successful integration of the collection formerly maintained by the BAZ Braunschweig, at IPK Gatersleben about 150,000 accessions are maintained in total now. At the Gatersleben site 130,000 accessions are stored in five cold chambers at temperatures of either 0 °C or -15 °C. The germinability of the material is tested frequently. Information about genus and species specific viability of the seeds is gathered.
The genetic integrity of genebank accessions after long term maintennance is studied using selected self- and cross-pollinating species. This is possible, because at IPK Gatersleben seeds are not only available from the cold store. For comparison, reference (herbarium) collections are maintained, originating from the initial growing season. Using molecular markers genetic fingerprints can be created and compared.
Again by applying molecular markers the genetic diversity of accessions (wheat, barley) collected during recurrent expeditions in comparable geographical regions is investigated. Beside rather small quantitative changes a distinct qualitative allelic flow is observed.
In co-operation with internal and external partners a wide-ranging characterisation and evaluation of the collection is performed. Especially for cereals (barley, wheat, rye) international available and new developed mapping populations are included. The main focus is on abiotic stress tolerance. Identified molecular markers closely linked to the genes of interest will be used in future to increase the efficiency of germplasm screening (marker-aided).
Scientists of the research group are teaching at the faculty of agricultural sciences at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg.
