The IPK library is a special scientific library. Its principal task is to supply literature locally to the institute's scientific employees. It is also a public library. Its stock is also available to interested persons outside the institute.
The library collects and makes available international specialist literature in the fields botany, genetics (with main focus on plant genetics), cytology, cell and tissue culture, agricultural plant cultivation, biotechnology and environmental protection for the scientific work of the institute's employees.

With the support of the DFG, the library cultivates the special collection areas: plant genetic resources, plant taxonomy and cultivated plants. Special emphasis must be placed on the collection of plant literature from all over the world: "Flora Worldwide".
