Leibniz Forum

With the Leibniz Forum, the Leibniz Association seeks to demonstrate the importance of science to the public in various cities. “Forever young – how workable are our grey cells?” was the question at the centre of the 3. November 2006 Leibniz Forum held in the Magdeburg Johannis Church. The event was part of the Magdeburg “Year of Science” events.

A number of renowned scientists took part in the discussions. These included Prof. Henning Scheich, Director of the Magdeburg Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology, his deputy Prof. Eckart Gundelfinger, Prof. Anna M. Wobus from IPK, Prof. Ekkehard Nuissl von Rein, Director of the German Institute for Adult Education, and Prof. Jan-Hendrik Olbertz, the Saxony-Anhalt Minister of Education and Culture. Dr. Carsten Könneker, Editor-in-chief of the professional journal Gehirn und Geist, published in Heidelberg, chaired the discussion. Greetings were sent by the Minister President of the province, Prof. Wolfgang Böhmer, Magdeburg’s mayor Dr. Lutz Trümper, and the President of the Leibniz Association, Prof. Ernst Theodor Rietschel. In addition, seven institutes of the Leibniz Community, including five from Saxony-Anhalt, displayed examples of their research work.

About 200 people were informed of the latest scientific advances in brain and learning research. The public were invited to ask the scientists questions, and some interesting cross-disciplinary links were made, such as between education and neurobiology.
