Topic: The role of a post-translational modification for the Superoxide Dismutase 1 in Arabidopsis thaliana

Background:
The working group “Seed Development” under the lead of Dr. Jozefus Schippers explores the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the development and stress response in plants. In this project we study the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) which is a pivotal enzyme in the ROS metabolism of plants by the dismutation of superoxide anions into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. Previous work explored a promising post-translation modification (PTM) on the SOD1 protein level. With this master thesis, we aim to shed additional light on this specific PTM and its physiological role for SOD1. More specific details can be discussed directly.

Your tasks:
In this project, we aim to identify the proteins that establish the PTM on SOD1 and the physiological role of this specific PTM. Therefore, we use a plethora of molecular techniques: Gateway cloning, protein isolation, protein-protein interactions, Western-Blot, and more specific assays.

You fit to us:

  • if you seek an opportunity for obtain your master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology outside of the university.
  • if you enjoy working with plants, bring strong communication skills, are creative, can work independently and have an interest in scientific research.
  • if you have knowledge about the biology of plants, basic molecular lab work, data collection systems (mainly Excel) and basic statistical methods. Specific knowledge in protein assays is advantageous and desirable.
