Research Interest

The Satellite Collections North research group (TEN) of the IPK Genebank, located at Gross Luesewitz and Malchow/Poel (both Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) are responsible for the collection, maintenance, characterization, evaluation, documentation, research and distribution of/on potato, oil and fodder crop plant genetic resources. With this, the research group contributes significantly to the IPK research theme 1, “strategies for the valorization of plant genetic resources”.


 A specific of the satellite collections at both Northern sites of IPK consists in the fact that via continuous work over decades, large and comprehensive genetic resources collections were compiled and maintained, especially via systematic collection trips, material exchange and by a resource management according to international quality standards. These in large parts reflect the genetic diversity of the respective cultivated species and their relatives.


The clarification of questions on molecular diversity (in general and trait-related), as well as on nutrient and water efficiency in grasses and potatoes (all externally funded) are in the scientific focus of our work. The service part encompasses the maintenance, evaluation, research and distribution of/on potato, oil and fodder crop plant genetic resources at the Gross Luesewitz and Malchow/Poel sites of the IPK. In addition, a continuous optimization of internal processes of the collection management according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 is conducted.

The following scientific topics are in the foreground:

  • extent of molecular diversity of the entire cultivated and Andean potato collection (appr. 3,100 accessions; BLE/BMEL funded);
  • association studies on traits dry matter yield, tuber storability and drought stress tolerance in potatoes (FNR/BME funded);
  • correlations between molecular and phenotypical diversity in Lolium perenne L. in relation to environmental data (climate, soil); regard: prediction of value determining traits and abiotic resistance reactions (EU-ERANET/BMEL funded);
  • phenotyping of drought stress tolerance (L. perenne; BLE/BMEL funded) as well as phosphorus efficiency (potatoes; cooperation with Rostock University, funded by Leibniz Science Campus Rostock);
  • systematic analysis and provision of phenotyping and evaluation data within the IPK research theme 1 for the elucidation of diversity and for an enhanced utilization of the TEN collections.
