The workshop will give an overview of international genebanks for crops and focus on the ‘German Federal ex situ Genebank for Agricultural and Horticultural Crops’ in Gatersleben ([link]http://www.ipk-gatersleben.de/en/gbisipk-gaterslebendegbis-i/). Seedbank workflows will be deduced from basic principles of seed maintenance and characterization approaches. In combination with a tour through the cold storage facilities, the workshop will reveal new perspectives on the world heritages of ‘Plant Genetic Resources’.

The maintenance of genebank accessions requires the long term storage as well as its regeneration. Each year between 6 and 8 thousand accessions are grown either in the field or in the glasshouses. The tour will give an overview about the regeneration activities in 2019.

Plant In vitro propagation and cryopreservation

The one-day course will provide an overview of principles of in vitro storage and cryopreservation including sterile working, preparation and propagation of in vitro cultures and procedures of cryopreservation in mint, garlic and potato. Most techniques are basic skills, which are necessary for plant biotechnology including DH or microspore cultures.

Practical Course in Fluorescence and Confocal Microscopy in Plant Science

The major objective of this practical course is to introduce wide-field, confocal laser scanning, super-resolution and imaging technologies to identify and characterize cellular processes in plants.

Topics: basic optics, detectors and light sources photochemistry involved in the development of fluorescent probes and the application of advanced optical microscopy techniques (FRAP, FRET, fluorescent labeling and staining)
