The use of genetic diversity and innovative methods for breeding to reduce grain shattering

Grain shattering unfavorable affects breeding efficiency in forage and turf grasses. In a joint project with the Satellite Collections North of the IPK Genebank, breeding company Steinach GmbH & Co KG and GenXPro GmbH (GXP) our ambition is to develop practical selection methods for relevant grass genotypes with reduced grain shattering characteristics. In the research group Structural Cell Biology, markers for indirect marker selection before flowering will be developed using cell biological methods and subsequently validated in the breeding material. Advantageous genotypes will be introduced into existing breeding programs, with the overall goal to economize seed production..
