Mission

The Satellite Collections North research group operates at Groß Lüsewitz and Malchow/Poel (both located in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania); it is responsible for the collection, maintenance, characterisation, evaluation, documentation, research and distribution of potato, oilseed and fodder crops genetic resources. Within the framework of IPK’s research theme “Valorisation of Plant Genetic Resources", the group makes a significant contribution to the expansion of the Gene Bank into a digital biological resource centre.

The collections at both sites, which have been assembled and maintained over several decades, represent the outcome of systematic collection trips, material exchanges and a management following international quality standards. The collections are thought to have captured most of the genetic diversity present in the target crop species as well as in their wild relatives.

The elucidation of collection-related questions on molecular diversity, on the influence of cold plasma regarding seed germination and on nutrient and water efficiency is the scientific focus of the working group. Reflecting the importance of phosphorus as a macronutrient, the group interacts with researchers at the University of Rostock to support the work of the Leibniz Science Campus Phosphorus Research Rostock.

The group is responsible for the maintenance and evaluation of the germplasm as well as providing phenotypic and performance data of the accessions. Collection management procedures are under continuous optimisation, in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015.

Currently, the infrastructure at both the Malchow and Groß Lüsewitz sites is being modernised. The expansion is intended to bring the technical infrastructure of the Federal Central Ex situ Gene Bank up to date.
