Research Concept

The focus of our research is the development of new knowledge and technologies with the goal of a comprehensive utilization of plant genetic resources in science, economy and society. 


Agriculture remains the foundation of our civilization. The dramatically grown performance of the agriculture in the last century was only possible on the basis of a broad scientific work. A more rapidly growing world population, changing environmental conditions and new demands of the people will require continuously intensive research and development.

As a center of crop research the IPK feels obligated to this challenge. The use of evolutionary diversity of crops plays an important role in this matter.  In light of the maintained crop diversity in the IPK-Genebank the work and projects of our research focuses primarily on agriculturally important plant species.

Scientific Departments and their Research Fields

An annual planning exercise is conducted to determine and redefine the institute's strategy and research programme. The four programmes map on the departments, essentially mirroring each of the centre's research mandates and reflecting the departmental competencies:

Transdepartmental Cooperation:

The largely disciplin-oriented programmes adrress current biological topics in the form of five trans-departemental and inter-disciplinary [link]research themes:


Also the scientific research groups cooperating in a trans-departemental manner via the IPK [link]Bioinformatics Platform. This coordinated network of bioinformatics staff is housed within the in the Bioinformatics Centre of the institute. It serves as a platform for the provision of services on a demand basis, it both operates and manages a number of databases and works to systematically improve the quality of the institute's scientific and technical IT infrastructure.
