Beagle Award Winner 2018

In 1831, the HMS Beagle was sail for its second expedition. On board was also Charles Darwin, who got on this sea voyage his knowledge, which was the basis for his later published theory of evolution. For the 8th time the Beagle Award was bestowed for excellent scientific qualification and social commitment. Two jurys decided about the winner: 8 student board members were one group and a scientific jury with 5 scientists and 3 employees from IPK administration decided with each 50%. In total 6 colleagues from IPK tried to get the award, in which the winner is getting 1500,- EUR.

Impressions from General Assembly of Leibniz PhD Network in Jena

From 26th to 28th September the General Assembly of Leibniz PhD Network took place in the Abbe Centre of Photonics in Jena. On this meeting, PhD representatives from all Leibniz Institutes and musee meet. The main goal of this assembly is the exchange of wishes from all ca. 4000 PhD students within the Leibniz community.

After the founding of the Leibniz PhD Network in 2016, which took place at IPK Gatersleben, it was now the third meeting of the network (more information about Leibniz PhD Network). Daniela Impe and Christian Hertig were representing the IPK PhD students this year. Arround 100 representatives, which respresent students from 63 of 96 Leibniz institutes, met this year there.

All in all we can conclude, that the situation of PhD students at IPK is quite good compared to other institutes. The communication between Student Board and the Board of Directors and the administration within IPK. The working conditions for PhD students are satisfactory. Nethertheless we want to keep the quality of IPK graduate program and want to give suggestions for its improving. For this we plant to make a survey about the situation and satisfaction of PhD students from IPK. First dicsussions are already in progress. Also we want to improve the conditions for future representatives of the PhD students to keep the successful work of the last years.

The application for the Beagle Award 2018 has started. This price is to honor excellent scientific and social engagement of PhD students who have been enrolled in the IPK PhD program.


We recommend to apply when you are about to finish your doctoral study or have received your doctoral degree within one year.


The price will be awarded with a price money of 1500€ and the presentation of this award will take place at the end of the Institutes Days.


The submission deadline for applications is set to 31st August 2018.

Meeting with PhD Students from Hohenheim

On 29th June a group of 9 PhD Students from Hohenheim University visited the IPK. After guided phenotyping fasility and genebank tours we enjoyed having BBQ and a beer together. Now they are waiting for us to visit them also in frame of the symposium "[link]Breeding for the next 200 years - prospects and challenges".
