Taxonomy encompasses nomenclature (assigning correct names), phylogenetics (determining evolutionary relationships) and systematics (grouping into meaningful units). The group seeks to define inter-species relationships, track the evolution of traits and understand the influence of geological and ecological factors over species stability and speciation. A wide range of molecular and microscopic techniques is combined with the capture of morphology to study: the mechanisms and processes underlying speciation, which include diversification, wide hybridization and chromosomal changes; the factors which ensure species cohesion - specifically to define the conditions under which speciation is inhibited; and the basis of ecological adaptation. Since variation at the molecular level is both important for systematics and contributes to speciation, many interconnections exist between our work and that of genome research.

The process of speciation is being investigated using approaches based on population genetics, phylogeography and phylogenetics, and is based on comparative cultivation of species in the greenhouse or in the field, as well as on what has been collected during expeditions to the regions where the materials originate (currently with a focus on the Steppe regions of the northern and southern hemispheres). These studies are complemented by modelling of today's potential climatic niche, as well as their distribution areas during the last ice age. Together with analyses based on molecular data, inferences can be drawn regarding the age of both individual species and species groups, and the evolution of traits over time, as well as allowing for the prediction of potential refugia and dispersal routes. The group also curates IPK's herbarium (GAT), a collection of some 500,000 specimens.

1) Research on the relationship of species and genera within the grass tribe Triticeae.

This tribe with about 300 species includes important cereals (barley, rye, wheat). The taxa are mostly distributed in open habitats of the temperate regions of the earth. Hybrid species and allopolyploids have arisen through recurrent crosses between species (also from different genera), which make the reconstruction of relationships extremely complicated. By analysing the sequences of about 400 genes evenly distributed across the genome, as well as whole chloroplast genomes, it is possible to reconstruct relationships within the Triticeae. Genome-wide SNP data (single mutations) additionally allow to detect gene flow between closely related species.

2) Detailed analysis of the genus Hordeum (barley)

For the barley genus Hordeum, we are working out a very detailed evolutionary history, ranging from relationships to dispersal events, ecological adaptations to the construction of whole genomes.

3) Revision of the genus Crocus

Through detailed morphological and molecular analyses of crocuses, the number of known species has increased in the last two decades from about 80 to now over 200. We are currently revising the systematics of the genus, which will place all species in a system that reflects their evolutionary history and relationships.

4) The evolution of saffron (Crocus sativus)

The origin of saffron has been speculated about for over a hundred years. By analysing the relationships of various crocus species as well as detailed studies of populations of Crocus cartwrightianus, we were able to clarify the origin of saffron: The spice plant originated in the Attica region of Greece from wild C. cartwrightianus. The sought-after triploid, sterile plant then spread through trade and is now cultivated as a single clone in different regions of the world. We are currently working to better understand the differences between the diploid parent and triploid cultivated forms, especially with regard to the fundamentals of the metabolic pathways involved in the production of saffron's constituents.
