Mission

Der Schwerpunkt unserer Forschung liegt auf der Evolution von Genomen und Karyotypen verwandter Pflanzengruppen mit unterschiedlicher Genomgröße und Chromosomenzahl. Die Aufklärung von Ursachen und Folgen in der Variabilität der Größe von Genomen steht im Mittelpunkt unseres Interesses. Hierfür analysieren wir Phänomene wie die Verdopplung von Genomen (Polyploidisierung), die Umlagerung von Chromosomen und Chromosomenbereichen (Translokation), aber auch die verschiedenen Reparaturwege von DNA-Doppelstrangbrüchen (DSB), um deren Einfluss auf die evolutionäre Stabilität und Dynamik von kleinen als auch großen Genomen zu testen.

Als Modellsystem dienen uns derzeit die Wasserlinsen (Lemnaceae) mit ihren 36 zu fünf Gattungen gehörenden Arten und großer zwischen- und innerartlicher Variabilität der Genomgröße.

Das obige Bild symbolisiert drei hypothetische Strategien der Evolution der Genomgröße, die auf unterschiedlichen Tendenzen der DSB-Reparatur beruhen und mit der Evolution des Karyotyps in Verbindung stehen. Mutationen innerhalb und/oder Selektion von DSB-Reparaturwegen können zur Konsolidierung einer Strategie oder zu einem Wechsel zwischen den Strategien führen. Das Modell erklärt darüber hinaus das sogenannte ‚C-value paradoxon‘, d.h., die fehlende Korrelation zwischen Genomgröße und genetischer Komplexität von Eukaryoten.
